My Hunting Life... In A Blog.

When I say "I shoot my own food" not many people take me seriously. Can you blame them?

Over the last 16 years of pigeon shooting and crop protection in the UK, I've learnt a lot about hunting and growing my own food, which has brought me much closer to my hunter gatherer roots, and given me a deeper understanding of food, nature and the science that goes hand in hand with it.

I have of course, made many mistakes along the way, and these mistakes - as well as my own personal tips and general experiences as someone who entered the Fieldsports world as an adult - are what I would like to share with you all, in the hopes it will make your journey a little easier and more enjoyable!

Getting the job done - when you don't have time to dilly dally on a stalk, take the thermal.

Yesterday's woodland stalk was magical, and textbook. Yes, a thermal was used to help find the deer quicker (this was a very large estate that required deer to be managed in order to protect new trees and crops). But field craft was also used alongside the handheld spotter; both prior to and after the shot was taken.

A beautiful evening on the marsh ended empty handed but heart full....

The tide was an hour too late for the position I was in so nothing came over low enough for a shot. And as a newbie to 'foreshore' fowling, I wasn't yet comfortable heading to the creek that I could tell another club member was on, who had a great evening from the amount of shots I heard!

This was Rigby's first visit and he was obsessed, so wonderful to see him in an environment that he loves - even when he gets stuck and whines at me in the dark with the tide heading in, making me crawl around in the mud in a mad panic and ring the marsh warden!! The LED collar was no good let me tell you 😅

Rigby got home and had a warm shower with Dad, I got home and had a warm bath - both of us feeling very happy with our outing and a lot less muddy!

What a weekend!!

Despite storm Claudia trying to mess up our trip we had a blast with new friends ✨️

A visit to Thimbleby clay ground Saturday morning to give the new Winchester a bash, a quick hour on the flood plains on duck Saturday night, and finally arrived home to scope out a new rabbit permission this evening!

Teeny tiny baby cuddles, dog cuddles, intros to even more new Fieldsports friends and alllll the late night chats over red wine - oh and lots of banter inbetween of course 😉

Looking forward to seeing you guys again soon, thank you for a wonderful weekend with some bloody awesome humans! Now time to conk out in front of the fire 🔥

As National Game Week comes to an end I'm taking a look back at my own hunter gatherer and activities over the years.

From hunting to butchery and cooking, to foraging and growing my own vegetables; I'm so happy that I am now closer to my food and understanding the its background and the science than ever before.

I feel healthier, I feel proud to be having a positive impact on my countryside and wildlife, and I feel content that I am feeding my family as nature intended.

Winter is coming....

No more short sleeves for me! But still lots of beautiful skies to look forward to over the coming months. Whether they're grey or clear, I love getting all dressed up and out in the countryside looking for my next meal.

A night out in the field is a night well spent...

A few nights back on a full moon I headed over to try and bag a few rabbits for the freezer.

When the moon came out from behind the clouds, I was revealed to every animal around lol so halfway through creeping down the 60 acre field, that was the end of that! But I enjoyed seeing the fox (which was saved due to the fact I only had my air rifle with me), great to see increased hare numbers and deer, plus hearing the owls all around me is always magical.

So I headed over to the farmyard to look for rats. I recently learned that rats tend to gather in bigger numbers as it gets colder, but also that they are prolific breeders so even if you only see a couple there'll be many more around before long!

As it was, I only saw one - he got it - and after 20 more minutes of no action I headed home, empty handed but with a happy farmer who now doesn't need to rush to put down poison, and with the itch already starting to get straight back out again!
