My Hunting Life... In A Blog.

When I say "I shoot my own food" not many people take me seriously. Can you blame them?

Over the last 16 years of hunting, foraging, vegetable growing and general crop protection in the UK, I've learnt a lot about harvesting my own food. This, in turn, has brought me much closer to my hunter gatherer roots; and given me a deeper understanding of food, nature and the science that goes hand in hand with it.

I have of course, made many mistakes along the way, and these mistakes - as well as my own personal tips and general experiences as someone who entered the Fieldsports world as an adult - are what I would like to share with you all, in the hopes it will make your journey a little clearer, easier and more enjoyable!

Looking at my role in the future of Fieldsports

2026 marked the start of a new era for me reclaiming my independence and making my mark within the world of Fieldsports; which amongst other things has included signing with an Agent and hiring a Photographer and PR Manager.

Sonia at PowerHouse Management and Verity at The Slattery Social are currently working behind the scenes on the SGWAA profile outside of the shooting world, which is exactly where I need to be - talking to those on the periphery that might be curious about the Fieldsports community and need to see someone they can relate to, to convince them to step over the threshold.

Some exciting collaboration projects are in the pipeline for later in the year - watch this space!

Hunter-gatherer life 🌱

When I say I'm a Hunter-gatherer, I mean it. Am I am expert in any of these fields? No. But what I have is Time, Will, and Patience.

- Time to put in the research and practice required when you don't have a close family member or friend to show you every single thing

- Willingness to learn how to put what Mother Nature provides in abundance to good use, for the benefit of my health, whether it's wild meat or wild plants

- Patience... not every hunt ends with a full freezer and not every foraging outing ends with a full basket (or not always the plants you were looking for)

But do I enjoy every single outing? Absolutely. This is one of many reasons why I don't look like a 43 year old - no fancy creams, no injections, just nature's goodness!

If you make sloe gin or collect blackberries in autumn- you have made a good start at foraging, why not try a bit more? There's so much out there that pairs beautifully with British game meats!

Two weeks ago I joined a panel at the Futue Countryside event at Raby castle to discuss how we can all help to get more people to engage with the countryside.

Since then so much has happened for me, I would love to know what everyone else has been upto and if our words made a difference to the delegates, or if they fell on deaf ears...

In the meantime - I have spoken to a sporting charity, a forest charity (more news to follow on these in the coming weeks), I have spoken to a Channel 4 producer and booked 2 dates to take my friends teenage girls out hunting for the first time ever.

Oh - and I have finished adding all the images to my book 🤩

I will continue putting my money where my mouth is and will always unapologetically share my passion for hunting and foraging with anyone who will listen, in the hopes that some of those listening may feel inspired to get out in the countryside in their own way too ✨️

Sometimes all you can do is sit and wait...

Last week I had some time sitting in my high seat, enjoying the feeling in my back of the tree swaying in the wind, it was like feeling the earth breathing.

I was keeping an eye on the landscape not only to be ready for when a deer appeared, but to do a 'head count' of all the hare - another crop and tree destroyer - to report back to the landowner.

After an hour of this (and of getting rained on), there was a sudden stillness - that's when I heard a shot and a thud in the distance and knew my guest had her quarry, and that we didn't have to sit around for another 2 hours!

Despite the joy of taking others out, I am looking forward to getting back out on my own tomorrow morning. Just not looking forward to the 3am start!!!

Successful muntjac harvest for my guest - and a happy land owner!

I get so much joy from taking others out, especially when they are respectful, responsible and not afraid of hard work - but even more so when they manage not 1, but 2 fantastic shots! Plenty of delicious wild meat for us both, and for the farmer too.

Despite the sun turning to a mini rain storm, we persevered, we supported each other through erecting the high seat, gralloch and extraction, then talked about future management of the land on the drive home.

Each outing has a story; this one has several stories that will bring us laughter, dopamine rushes and a feeling of awe that will be remembered for a lifetime ✨️
